I assisted in the operating room today on one of the most complex hand cases I have ever seen. A five year old boy had lost the use of his ulnar nerve due to a forearm fracture. Dr. Kinyua did a great job. It involved moving 3 tendons to replace the lost function. Hopefully in six weeks I can show you a video of the outcome. The operation took 4 hours. This does illustrate the progress of orthopedic surgery here. When I came there might have been someone to do this but probably not a fellowship trained hand surgeon. There were two other cases to be done. The picture shows a man attacked with the equivalent of a machete breaking a bone an cutting tendons. The other patient, a lady with cut tendons due to domestic abuse is not pictured. As in the US, domestic violence has increased with the isolation of the pandemic. What has decreased is the number of vehicle accidents due to the curfew and bars being closed after 10 pm.

Tomorrow we visit the Disability Community Center. It will be interesting to hear about the affect of the pandemic on this population.

I hope to be over jet lag soon.🤔

Blessings,

Doug
