January 12

Good evening. We left Chogoria this morning and arrived for lunch at Maua. Here we met a group of professors and students working at integrating the laboratory clinicians with medical clinicians. We then went to the Disabled Children Center which is next to the hospital where you support their outreach and care of disabled children. We learned about a new technology that uses card board, newspaper and flour and water glue to laminate the material into strong materials used to make support chairs to order for the children. They are very inexpensive   Please see the pictures. We hopped into cars to go to the homes of children that we had operated on in the past. We climbed a narrow path to the shacks where a couple of the children live. One shack had a girl, her mom, grandmother and aunt. Both looked very elderly and were quite disabled. One of them was blind. A picture of the shack and the family are included. After walking back down the narrow path we went 21 miles on bad roads to a small town to visit a day care for disabled children so their parents can work. The staff is wonderful with the kids. I evaluated 14 children under 5 years old.  11 had cerebral palsy, one had very low muscle tone, another had hydrocephalus and the last was born with out one arm and a rudimentary upper arm on the other side. It was an experience unlike anything I had done in the past. You have helped by health insurance for many children like these. Thank you.

Blessings
